Post subject: WAS Scenarios- The Best of the Best! Nomination Thread  Reply with quote   (Liked by:0)  Like this post
We have a lot of scenarios and rulesets out here, but what is really the crème of the crop?  It's nice to have a list of all the scenarios ever concieved, but if I'm new, I'll quickly discover that many of the rulesets, scenarios and campaigns need work, revision, major playtesting or they just are incomplete.

This thread will be a nomination thread.  I will list on our scenario list thread the "Best of the Best".  These will be on the top so anyone looking for a good scenario without any major work can simply grab one from the "Best" list and they know that it has been completed, playtested and is popular.

RULES:

1.) The submission must be a scenario/campaign/ruleset that is complete and playtested (ie not still in development)
2.) Each nomination must be either an "official" scenario/campaign/ruleset released by WotC or an "unofficial" one that has been posted either here or on the WotC boards.
3.) You must have played through the scenario/campaign/ruleset at least once in order to nominate it.
4.) You may make as many nominations as you wish.  Post your nomination in this thread.

Once a scenario/campaign/ruleset has received 5 nominations, it will make the list!  Simple!

In addition, any nomination that makes the list will be submitted by myself into the Goldmine for consideration there as well!  Two birds with one stone! Wink

I'll start off by throwing out (just off the top of my head) a few that I've really enjoyed and I believe should make the cut:

jfkziegler's Troop Landing Rules
Lucky Y's Grandest Fleet
ND's WAS Deathmatch
WAS Large Map Houserules by afilter
Order of Battle houserule by Duck Crusader
OBJECTIVE: CRETE By fredmiracle
Random Fleets by RAEVSKI
1939-1945 Total War! by Snippersly

I think this is a pretty good list of the best on here.  I support them all.

I haven't tried all those, yet, but I can vouch for ND's Deathmatch and jfk's Troop Landing rules.  Both are a lot of fun, every time I play with 'em.   Very Happy

I want to nominate ND's Deathmatch.  This is a GREAT variation.  Games require a lot of strategy.

As a ruleset - Order of Battle balances the game. I find OOB works best at 200+ points.

Also - afilter's long distance rules rock.  They are MUCH better than the standard long distance rules.

WOW!  I'm so happy people played this and that it continues & to be considered for archiving is really an honor.  Thank you all!

I really like JFKZ's Troop Landing Rules, NDs Death Match,  as well as Afilters Large Map rules.  We use the original & hybrids of those rules quite often.  Now that I've pulled up Total war again I want to play it.
Thanks again for the nod!

I'll take this as a nomination for the three mentioned plus your own.  Wink

I admit I've never actually tried Warspite's missions.  Though I've used them quite often for inspiration for my own scenarios.  Hmmm, I might have to actually give them a try.

I would recommend removing this requirement:

3.) You must have played through the scenario/campaign/ruleset at least once in order to nominate it.

I understand the reasons behind it, but I believe this is the core reason behind the low nomination count.  The fact is, many people are interested in scenarios and campaigns and many people enjoy reading good ones, but few actually have the time and/or ability to actually play them.

I would like to take the chance to say that WAS Large Map Houserules by afilter are some of the best rules I have played. Make some more senarios please.

I don't like to toot my own horn, but I'm going to make a rare exception and suggest you all check out the Operation:  Mexican Standoff scenario I just entered into the Olympics Scenario Contest:  http://aaminis.myfastforum.org/ftopic22098-0-asc-60.php

It's a true three-person scenario where each player plays a different nation and each nation has its own unique victory conditions. We playtested it the other day and it is a really fun interesting scenario - three players with different victory conditions makes it a very rich, nuanced game experience. Each player has to consider TWO other interests/opponents on the board, which is unusual in WAS, if not unique to this scenario.

My buddy "geoteach" who doesn't like sea game at all and thinks it is FAR inferior to the land game liked playing with three people so much he's mentioned it twice in the last week.

While I would love to have more nominations, the goal of the "Best of the Best" is not quantity, but quality.

While I certainly believe a ruleset can be determined to be good simply by reading the rules, I believe that you have to actually play through a ruleset to actually be able to determine if it is great.

I think this requirement is a key one for determining what scenarios we have that are the greatest.  I am certainly willing to hear other thoughts, however.
