The Fall of Manila. 11 February 1945
General MacArthur had hoped that the japenese forces commanded by General Yokoyama would withdraw from Manila without fighting and was even planning a massive military parade in the city to celebrate the re-conquest of the Philippines. MacArthur banned the use of heavy guns so that the city would be untouched for the parade.
Meanwhile the japenese defenders under General Iwabushi disobeyed the withdrawal order from Yokoyama and organised the defence of the city (about 15000 men strong, mainly marine troops). The japenese also held many prisoners of war under their guard.
The american 37th infantry division after getting engaged in fierce fighting in the nothern part of the city and the supporting 1st cavalry division soon brought into the fight tanks and artillery to reduce the japenese forces. It would be a bloodbath.
On 11th July, the final american assault against the now cornered japenese (with their back to the harbour) began...
Map:
To create Manila's harbour:
Place Map 12 vertically with the number in the upper right corner. Then slide map F3 (the one with a river embankment) underneath it until you only have the river and one and a half hex of ground left.
See Picture.
Then place city tiles all along the water hedge.
Finaly place city tiles on hex B9X and B40A.
Place a prisoner unit in both of these hexes.
Prisoners dont affect game play or stacking but are important for victory conditions.
US 37th infantry division:
set up east of the row of hexes starting with B76A.
red devil captain x2
garand x10
bar gunner x2
thompson gunner x2
M1919 x2
flamethrower x2
sherman
(105) sherman
M5 halftrack x2
M16 halftrack
US howitzer
FO jeep
P 40 Tomahawk
Note: the US cant use flamethrowers, Air or (105) sherman fire against an hex holding POWs.
Iwabushi's Central defence Sector:
Set up west of the same row of hexes.
SNLF captain x2
SNLF fanatics x4
arisaka x8
type 92 mg x2
honor bound hero x2
imperial sniper
47 AT gun x2
70mm type 92 x2
armored car x2
tank obstacle x4
(all soldiers can spot for the artillery)
Starting on turn 2, roll a dice on a 5 or 6:
"Unexpected air support": add to the japenese forces:
A6M zero x2
"shiden-Kai"
Victory conditions:
Major US victory:
At the end of turn 7:
Both POWs units have been liberated and the two central harbour hexes (those next to hex B40A) are cleared of Japenese.
US victory: only the two central harbour hexes are clear of japenese.
Japenese victory: The 37th infantry division cant reach its objectives.

I thought we could do with some Pacific action over here.
I've only played it 3 times so far (most of last night actually) and had a lot of fun. The Americans face a mighty opponent.
Feedback most welcome! _________________

I think i'm going to try this one tonight after work. But instead of going for a full on US assault i'll try to break it down into smaller assault teams and get the flanks.
It might work better. _________________

I've worked on Manila and did a bit of editing after another two playtests.
i've added one SNLF fanatic
withdrew one sherman
and added to the US forces:
1 howitzer and its attached FO jeep.
It works way better!
Both games, the japenese got the unexpected air support which even if not that historical (i've just watched The War episode about Manila while playing!) adds a nice touch to the scenario.
Enjoy. _________________

In liue of Panzers Painted White, our group played your scenario last night at our weekly game night. It was a blast! At least for the Americans...lol
When we placed our units the Amreican's appeared to be on shakey ground against all the Fanatics and even match vs the Arisaka Rifles.
As the game began the Tomahawk made a modest effort as the US advanced first trying to sieze territory and push the Japanes back. The next pair of turns were harsh as the US took the casualties that it dished out keeping things even. About turn 3, the Shermans got into the fight.
The 105 wrecked havoc but took an AT round in return leaving it damaged after a failed cover roll. It did liberate a prisoner so we had 1/3 of our objectives completed fairly quickly. The M4A1 was used mostly in an AI role and the .50 cal was made of gold last night. In the next three turns the machine gun on the tank killed an Arisaka, a Japanese Hero and shot down a Zero. When it shot down the plane it was disrupted yet still rolled a 5,6,6,6,6,3,4,5,1... it was unbelieveable.
The japanese air did very little to sway the battle, only making 3 appearances in 7 turns. The flamethrowers knocked out a pair of Fanatics and the push began. The US liberated the last priosoner on turn 5 and then had the harbor contested at the end of the turn. A quick mop up over the last two turns left the Japanese eradicated and a complete US victory.
This was a fun scenario, easy to play, good objectives (I really liked the prisoner rescue) and a single map made for a good brawl. The only question from my opponent was...how come the Japanese couldnt kill the prisoners if they got pushed back to far...or after turn 5 or 6, maybe to put some pressure on the US to move and fight faster.
Anyway, thanks for a great scenario! _________________ Custom Painted Minis: http://riversidegaming.myfastforum.org/forum52.php

Actually, the names were General Yamashita and Admiral Iwabuchi--the latter former captain of HIJMS Kirishima, IIRC.
On the whole, nicely written scenario! _________________ <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Thank you Diamonback. My sources are French (2eme GM which is a bi-montly publication). They had a nice article last month about Manila and Leyte. _________________

Glad you enjoyed it!
Single map scenarios are good fun.
I'm sure we could experiment with a rule regarding the POWs.
During my playtests the japenese air force didnt last long either due to the double shot ability of the US AA halftrack. _________________
