Post subject: Operation Adjacent - FRA 1940 (Battle Pics added)
|
|
|
Hi everybody,
I was thinking to post here a Scenario I just made and played also...
From the start I want to state that the map should be printed in 4 sheets of A0 type paper, so it will be quite... a big map.
It's a Scenario for 4 Players (though it can be played by 2 also).
Very important: this is a fictional story, set in the historical context of WW2.
__________________________________________________________
OPERATION “ADJACENT”
Location: France, near the town of Bethemont
Date: 15th May, 1940
Part of operation “Case Yellow/ Case Red”, the capture of the town of Bethemont (FRA) named operation “Adjacent” is of vital importance to the German High Command in the on-going invasion of France and the Low Countries.
The concept of Blitzkrieg took the French by surprise. The French Army doctrine seems outdated, morale among the ranks is down and few are the victories that keep the French hoping for now.
First days of the invasion are almost an all-out success for the German attackers who succeed in destroying the French Aviation and a big part of the British Royal Air Force support. Having domination over the skies, the Germans advance into France and the Low Countries at an alarming rate. The Panzer Divisions use their superiority in numbers and coordination to outflank and outmaneuver the Allied defenses. Still, not everything works out as planned for the invaders. Allied unified Command in France is able to organize some key points of resistance and the Maginot Line is yet to fall entirely.
One of the strong points against the German advance is Bethemont, a strategic town that is now defended by French, British and Polish troops. Intelligence on the Axis part has the Allied defensive plan cracked so the newly formed 22nd Panzer Division bound for North Africa is relocated to German Army Group B.
Initially, 31st SS Division had to attack Bethemont alone but their lack of combat missions gives doubt to the German High Command, so in light of new intelligence, it is decided that 22nd Panzer, formed mainly from veterans of the Poland Invasion, will join in the attack.
15th of May 1940, operation “Adjacent” is about to start. Allied defenders are on positions waiting the German arrival in the area. The French High Command plans to wait for the first attack before taking any initiative to counter-attack and push the Germans back.

British Expeditionary forces are also present in the area, most likely defending the eastern road that leads into the town. Do not engage them alone if possible!
31st SS Panzer Division “Parsifal” is also heading towards Bethemont from the East along the road. We hope they get there in time to deal with the British forces. Assist them, once they’ve arrived.
Luftwaffe Command has informed our HQ that your air support is limited to one Mission and will be provided by 3rd Fighter Bomber Squadron. If the mission is successful Luftwaffe Command is willing to reinforce your Division with an infantry battalion.
Now, take that town, it is vital for the success of the invasion. These are your orders!

Though the Allied forces lack the coordination, you may encounter French Mechanized Elements and Polish infantry units also. If they oppose, engage and destroy them first, before moving towards the town.
22nd Panzer has limited air cover from the 3rd Fighter-Bomber Squadron. If needed, take the initiative and call Luftwaffe support in order to assist you, before they do.

Deployment:
Orders:
12th Mechanized Light Division
“Général de division,
Deploy your troops mainly in the forest South of the town of Bethemont, reinforce your positions there (make use of all obstacles and traps put at your disposal) and stop the German advance. You will be facing an enemy Mechanized Division that initially was bound for North Africa.
Our troops lack the morale but should you be able to stop the enemy from passing the woods, our Divisional HQ will reinforce your Division with an infantry battalion to replace your losses.
The main objective is to defend the town of Bethemont, so fall back if needed and defend it at all costs. The center of the town must not fall into enemy hands or all it’s lost!
Under your command was placed also the Polish 4th Infantry Division that was refitted in France.
British Expeditionary Forces are deployed East of Bethemont, guarding the road leading into town. We expect some advanced German troops to be heading their way, but the 5th British Mechanized should assist you after they secure the area.
Your deployment maps are here enclosed.

Deployment:
Orders:
5th Mechanized Infantry Division
“Lieutenant Colonel,
Your orders stand clear: defend Bethemont from all out aggression! You will be facing a SS Panzer Division in great need of proving itself. We anticipate their arrival along the road entering the town from the East, so take defensive positions accordingly and block any attempt to enter the town by the enemy.
French troops are positioned South of Bethemont, (SW of your deployment area) in the forests, blocking an incoming attack by another German Panzer Division, likely not a SS one though.
Our effort is limited so engage only in situations where you are not outgunned or outnumbered. Proceed with maximum caution and fall back to the town if the situation becomes critical. We cannot replace your loses so keep them to a minimum while inflicting maximum damage to the enemy. The Royal Air Force is for now unable to assist you.
If possible, help the French effort in the SW, we expect them to encounter difficulties in dealing with the enemy. A small Polish contingent is under French Command there also, but we asses the Poles situation as critical since they are badly equipped for this type of engagement.
It is paramount to the Joint British – French Command that this town doesn’t fall into enemy hands.
Documents regarding the field situation are forwarded to you along with Your Orders.
God save the King!” _________________ Custom AAM Maps & Counters here

SCENARIO PLOT
Army Deployment: Allied players first (inclusive of traps and obstacles), then German players.
1st Turn (only): German players move/attack first, then Allied players.
Dice modifiers / Unit restrictions / Reinforcements:
- 22nd Panzer (GER): High Morale
- 3rd Luftwaffe Fighter-Bomber Squadron (GER): Raid, Luftwaffe HQ (reinforcements are deployed adjacent to the HQ).
- 12th Mechanized Light Division (FRA)*: Low Morale.
*Reinforcements: if after 5 complete turns no units of 22nd Panzer (GER) are in the deployment area of 12th Mechanized (FRA), a French infantry battalion (2x MAS Rifle) is deployed as reinforcements adjacent to the Objective hexes.
- 4th Infantry Division (POL): Lack of equipment.
Victory conditions: In order to win, the German players must place one unit in each of the 3 hexes designated as Objectives in the town of Bethemont and hold the Objective hexes one full attack phase. Holding the Objective hexes is validated if at the end of a turn, the German player(s) has a unit in that hex, regardless of any enemy units that may be also present. If the German players fail, the victory is given to the Allied defenders.
MAP
Yellow hexes - city hexes
Green hexes - forest hexes
Blue line - Road axis (we play with a Facing Cost Movement for vehicles, for further detail see http://aaminis.myfastforum.org/about4332.html , paragraph III.1)
Grey thick line - deployment area (does not appear on the actual map)
Light blue thick line - deployment area (does not appear on the actual map)
____________________________________________________
The MAP (you will need a plotter and AutoCAD software):
http://www.mediafire.com/?shareke...c8115a32017f8c1d7b8eada0a1ae8665a
After you open the DWG file, see that the map is divided in 4 parts by a orange line. These are the 4 pieces of the final map that you will plot individually. The orange line won't show on the maps, it is invisible for the plotter.
______________________________________________________
Later edit:
| Quote: | As promised I return to post the map for this scenario that can be printed in A3 format paper.
Here are the steps you must follow:
1. Download the "zip" file with the scenario map. (check it for viruses), here is the link (it is called "bethemont_v1_A3 - Standard.zip"):
http://www.mediafire.com/?shareke...0d0d290dca69ceb5ce04e75f6e8ebb871
2. Open the "dwg" file with AutoCAD* software.
3. After opening the file go to FILE toolbar and choose Plot (or CTRL+P). In the window that opens choose your Printer and Paper Size (A3** or equivalent in inches) and in the drop box "what to plot" choose option WINDOW (this enables you to choose what part of the map you will print first). Choose the first orange rectangle, then print it by hitting OK in the dialog box. After this repeat this step by printing the second rectangle and so on.
The map was divided into 16 rectangles that can be printed in smaller type of paper, meaning A3.
________________________
*AutoCAD software opens the DWG files (as this map is), usually this software must be payed... but you know, for printing a few sheets you can find it on torrents. Else, there are a few software programs that are free and can open DWG files, but cant remember their names and never used them.
**A3 type of paper I believe is 11.69 x 16.54 inches. Check if your printer can print this type of paper (smaller ones can't).
I really do hope this helps.
Future questions or comments pls leave them here on this topic. |

Ok, since I cannot attach the map to this message, you can send me a PM with an email address and I will send the map to that email... if anybody wants, that is.
The map is a DWG file (aprox 2 Mb), in which you will find the aerial foto of the real terrain and the mesh of hexes over it, all divided into 4 sheets, that after are plotted form the final map.
ps= feel free to give any advice for the scenario or on any method for attaching this file to this message... _________________ Custom AAM Maps & Counters here

I'm afraid it will have to be one that hasn't been shown before. That creativity challenge will probably start at the beginning of April and finish 2 weeks later.
I don't know what a DWG file is, but I think there are websites where you can upload a file for free. _________________

I see, ok then but you might wanna specify all the Challenges before the Tournament because such a scenario takes time to make... if I knew that this was one of the challenges maybe I would have waited a little bit until posting it.
anyway, a DWG file is an extension for the AutoCAD software (technical drawing software). I used it to over impose the hexes on the aerial photo. _________________ Custom AAM Maps & Counters here

Yes this looks really really cool! Thank you, Red Baron!
You can upload the map to a mediafire.com account. It doesnt cost a penny and its a sort of online hard disk and it provides you with automatic generated download links. _________________

It certainly looks fun. I'll have to get used to your rules variant first, but this looks like it has the potential for a lot of depth. Don't know how much it'll cost me to print the maps. That is the only foreseeable barrier to me giving this spin. _________________ Powerful men are well advised not to use violence,

Yes, the only problem is that you need:
1. AutoCAD software in order to open the file and then plot it.
2. A plotter with A0 (european standard) paper (roll) in order to plot the 4 pieces of the map.
or
You might be an Engineer in which case you know what I am talking about
Here are the Zipped files (dwg and jpg) for the MAP:
http://www.mediafire.com/?shareke...c8115a32017f8c1d7b8eada0a1ae8665a
After you open the DWG file, see that the map is divided in 4 parts by an orange line. These are the 4 pieces of the final map that you will plot individually. The orange line won't show on the maps, it is invisible for the plotter.
Please check them for viruses if you dld them. _________________ Custom AAM Maps & Counters here

| Pasalades wrote: | | I'll have to get used to your rules variant first | Well, you do not have to play this scenario with House Rules Romania in mind.
Actually, when we play this scenario we have that "facing cost" for the movement of vehicles, but that is a choice for more realism to the game and it is not a "must" for this scenario.
You may play this scenario with full original rules without any problems.
If you observe the map, on the hexes with roads there is a blue axis line, that was put there in order to help my group with the "facing cost" for vehicles House Rule. But if you do not use that, just ignore the line. On the plotted map is not so visible anyway.

Next time I play this scenario I will post some pics!
If someone plays it and finds it out of balance (I tried to test it and it came out positive) please leave a note here. Together we improve. _________________ Custom AAM Maps & Counters here

Plotter is a type of printer let's say. I am not sure it is the correct term... It's a type of printer that can print on A0, A1 or A2 type of paper (european standard). Many times it uses a roll of paper and not sheets. Something like this:

When you go in FILE menu in AutoCad to print something, you will find PLOT instead of PRINT command.
But, I will modify the MAP for this scenario in order to be able to print it on A3 type of paper. Still you will have to print several A3 sheets and then "puzzle" them together for the whole map.
I will make the modification in the following days so maybe this Scenario will be more user friendly if able to print it on A3 type of paper.
