For purposes of damage due you roll each battery type: main, seconday and tertiary separately and score the damage that way.
In which case if you were to hit 2X with a main, and 1 each with a secondary and tertiary on a target with armor of 4 would you have 3 attacks that individually add up to nothing or one total attack that would score one damage?

I don't understand the ASW rules if every ASW capable vessel lowers a sub hit die -1 and a sub can only hit on a 6 then the sub can never hit. Yet it all natural sixes are automatic hits then the rule has no effect. I'm confused.

The cruiser Montepelier has an AA range of 1 does that mean it gets to fire twice at an enemy a/c one at range 1 and once at 0?

You roll each weapons (mains, secs, terts) separately, each against a single target.  The result of each attack can be a miss, a single hit, or a vital hit.

(torpedoes are the exception here, scoring 2 damage per 6 rolled)

ASW Threat lowers the number of attack DICE, not the results of the dice.  (i.e., -1 die, not -1 per die)

No - just like Main guns can have attack values at ranges 0,1,2, and 3, the Montpelier has AA attack values at ranges and 0 and 1.  Just like Main guns, you pick a single target WITHIN range of the weapon, and attack it.

Each gun attack has the potential to generate 1 of 3 outcomes:

Miss:
your total number of successes (4=1, 5=1, 6=2 successes) does not equal the armor. no damage. (some Special Abilities (SA) come into play only when you hit, others apply just for attacking, so you can miss, and the SA still works)

1 Hit :
your successes are equal to the armor, but less than the vital. Say you are attacking the Haguro, it is a 4/10/3 (4 armor, 10 vital armor, 3 hull). if you got 8 or 9 successes, while this is twice the armor, it only counts as 1 hit.

Unit destroyed:
your  # of successes was equal to or greater than the VITAL armor. no matter how many hull points remain, the unit is destroyed (taking effect at end of phase).

knowing vital armor is important, when bigger units like BB's start shooting at cruisers, or cruisers at DD's, hitting the vital is common.

some thoughts on tactics:
v. haguro, 4/10/3 it is common to try to hit it 3 times to sink,
v. Gorizia, 5/9/3 it is common to go for the vital hit with a BB attack of 12+, as shooting at it with 6,7 or 8 dice cruiser guns misses often. Another popular vital armor victim is the 4/8/3 Vainamoinen.

Armor is one hit and vital armor is two,  however the hull points are what exactly?
Also what makes the torpedo attack useful?  Bc I usually don't play with submarines, and I have been trying to get an answer I can understand coherently for these questions.

Number of successes equal to or over Armor : 1 hull point damage

Number of successes equal to or over Vital Armor : unit destroyed

So for a big unit like a battleship with 5 hull points, you'd have to hit it with 5 gunnery attacks which rolled equal to or over armor to sink it (or equal/over vital armor just once at any point)

Torpedo attacks are useful because they don't take armor or vital armor into account : you're just as likely to damage a battleship as a destroyer. They also do 2 points of damage per hit (3 for a Long Lance, although torpedo defense reduces torpedo damage).

I need clarification on this. Any unit with Heavy AA uses AA during the Air Defense Phase, correct?

Yes, in the air defense phase
