While painting ul this sbip today I noticed that the gun turrets have 1 gun only rather an unusual arrangement for a heavy cruiser!!!

This ship & its sisters were built near the end of WW1.  They were an alternative to armored cruisers.  They were fast, like the ww1 light cruisers, but the size of armored cruisers with larger guns than light cruisers.  They were designed to protect the trade routs from raiders. If you look at the Dutch cruiser Java built at the same time, it also has single guns in shielded mounts.  Turrets for all cruisers came in the late 1920s+.
The Hawkins cruiser were the first Heavy Cruisers.

The Hawkins is indeed the paradigm cruiser - the EXACT ship that is the example for which the Washington Naval Treaty set its limits and made definitions. 10,000 tons and 7.5" guns.

As with many rules, the first thing you do is start to find ways of cheating them. Patterning small guns after larger ones and moving 2 and 3 guns into a single turret was the way to get fire power onto the 10,000 ton size, even though a single hit could now eliminate 1/3 of your the ship's firepower, not just a fraction (1/7 or 1/10, etc.)

On my W@S model, few if any of the turrets can actually move, model design flaw i think. I have always aspired to cut away part of the ships structure to allow them to turn, but am too afraid, and acquiring even a second Hawkins has proved most elusive.
