Post subject: Force Z+, A hypothetical 300 point battle - 10 December 1941  Reply with quote   (Liked by:0)  Like this post
The Royal Navy, with amazing forsight, planning and luck, have assembled a powerful task force (Z), commanded by Admiral Sir Tom Phillips, at Singapore, with which to oppose the Japanese landings on the coast of Malaya.

Warned of their approach by air and submarine reconnaisance, Vice Admiral Kondo Nobutake sets out to intercept with his Southern (Malay) Force Main Body. He is supported by land based air units mainly from the 22nd Air Flotilla.

See post further down for an alternative British OOB that removes the ships under repair and replaces them with allied and British ships that were on their way to Singapore at the time. It is also a legal 300 point build as it has only 25 units by bringing in HMS Revenge from India.

Royal Navy Force Z - 300 points.

BB Prince of Wales (F)
BC Repulse.
CV Indomitable (use Illustrious) with 1 x Albacore (use Swordfish MkI model with TK card) and 1 x Fulmar (use Barracuda model with TN card).
CV Hermes (use Bearn model with TN card) with 1 x Swordfish MkII.
CA's Cornwall (use Kent) and Exeter.
CL Mauritius (use Jamaica).
CL's Danae, Durban and Dragon (use ORP Dragon model with TN Dunedin card).
DD Jupiter (use Javelin).
DD's Electra, Encounter and Express (use St Laurent model with TN Electra card).
DD Isis (use Vasalissa Olga model with TP Gloworm card).
DD's RAN's Vampire and Vendetta (use Witte de With model with TP Vampire card).
DD's Stronghold and Tenedos (use Goteborg).
SS's Dutch K-XVII and O16 (use Soviet S-13 model with TP K XVI card).
On the land air base - 1 x B-339 Buffalo (use the Finnish model with the TP Dutch card) and 1 x Hudson (use Beaufighter model with TN card).

IJN Southern (Malay) Force Main Body - 300 points.

BB's Haruna and Kongo.
CA's Atago (F)
CA Takao (use an Atago model with TN Maya card)
DD's Arashi, Hagikaze, Nowaki, Maikaze (use Yukikaze)
DD's Ikazuchi and Inazuma (use Hatsukaze model with TP Fubuki card)
DD's Asashio, Oshio, Michishio and Arashio (use Isokaze model with TN Asagumo card)
SS's I58 (use I25), and I65 (use I19)
At land airbase - 2 x Betty G4M, 4 x Nell (use Betty G4M1 models with TK card), 1 x A6M2 Zero, and 2 x Oscar (use George models with TA card).

Play as a standard 300 point scenario.

NOTES:-
1) The extra allied ships in Force Z are units that were nearby and could have been called in earlier (e.g. Exeter and Cornwall), were undergoing refit or repair in Singapore (e.g. Mauritius and Isis), or were considered too slow for the operation (e.g. Hermes and the D-Class cruisers).
2) The Indomitable was damaged in November and wasn't repaired in time to join Force Z.
3) The Buffalos are from the RAAF 453 sqdn.
4) The Hudsons are from the RAAF 1 Sqdn which were based in Malaya and actually attacked the IJN landing force at Kota Bharu.
5) The Dutch submarines were both in the area at this time.
6) There were more IJN submarines operating in this area, but these are the two that actually sighted (I65) or attacked (I58) Force Z.
7) To differentiate between Atago and Maya (both Takao class) either mark one unit in some way or just use another IJN heavy cruiser for Maya.

Looks great - I played a What If version of this at 200 points, and left the IJN OOB up for gabs from forces available in my opponents box.

Result:
Fuso, Nagato, Haruna and Kirishima laughed off the fighter cover brought by the Indomitable, and ships started going down fast, At the end, the crippled PoW and Nagato exchanged fire and misses for 4 turns. The Indomitable came within 1 hit of sinking the Nagato before withdrawing and seeing the PoW slip beneath the waves.

your setup looks more promising for the RN and allies.

I am looking forward to amending the allied oob soon with the new set.

I know I'll have the three D class cruisers, but what else is a real possibility?

Indomitable - Could be but highly unlikely.
Hermes - no chance with Eagle in set.
Fulmar- unlikely but possible.
Cornwall or Maritius reprints - no.
A-I class DD - a cert!
Vampire or Vendetta - I wish.
Stronghold or Tenedos - no.
K class sub - well you never know. If the Dutch get another sub this is a good candidate.
Blenhiem - very outside chance, but no.
Allied Buffalo reprint - not beyond the realms of possibility.

At least this sort of thing keeps me occupied while waiting!
England play Montenegro tonight and just need a draw to qualify for Euro 2012. That will occupy me this evening soccer

Well, in the end we only got Dragon, and that is only the size of a C class, but, sigh....never mind.

I have amended the scenario to include the D class cruisers. I have also changed the OOB's so that all units are official WAS units. The Notes include some instructions for making the units more historical by using custom cards but that will affect the points balance slightly, and is entirely optional.

Some additional research also revealed that the 2 Dutch submarines that I had postulated could have been in the area at this time, actually were, and I have their correct names.

Well despite only getting Dragon in Set VI, the TP and thus far revealed TN decks have been much kinder. I have therefore made replacements from my original wish list above with the following:

A-I class 2DD's! Electra and Gloworm for St. Laurents and V. Olga
Vampire for Witte de Withs
K class sub K XVI for S13's
Dutch Buffalo for Finnish Buffalo

Points worked out amazingly well. -3 for three St.Laurents to Electras, +1 for the V.Olga to Gloworm, and +2 for two S13's to K XVI's.

Maybe I'll get Hermes in the TN set?

Admiral Duncan, are you interested in playing this scenario online?  I'll be happy with either side. Smile

Admiral Duncan.

Thing I really, really like about the way you put these scenarios together are:

- the amount of research of units that "could have" been there

- listing the units by name, offering the proxy and card along with them.

You make it so easy to do these! Your work will be the model for me when I finally finish putting together "The Final Countdown" scenario, which is still in progress.

Thank you!

Sorry, just seen this. I don't play online, and only play ftf with my brother, but thankyou for the offer.

With the release of the TN deck we have more pieces to this jigsaw. I have amended the scenario fairly significantly as follows:

1) Hermes now has her own card.
2) The three D class cruisers are much better represented by the Dunedin card as the ORP Dragon card was a later war modified version.
3) 1 and 2 above took six points off the allies, which was very nicely filled by the addition of a Hudson. These were operated in Malaya at this time by the RAAF 1st Squadron, and they even made attacks against the invading Japanese ships. This beefs up the allied air a bit more, but it does now make the allies two units over limit.
4) The Fulmars on Illustrious are now properly represented.
5) The IJN OOB has changed alot. They now have ten instead of eight DD's and this is based on the Navweaps website OOB. Some Yukikaze's have also been replaced by Fubuki's and Asagumo's.
6) The CL Kinu has gone (it was in the area but not actually part of the Japanese task force).
7) Takao can now be seperately represented by the Maya card.
8) To make the points fit the elite zeros have been downgraded to normal ones. But as they are actually representing 1 elite Zero and 2 Oscars, it averages out to about the same effect.

Thanks TN! Very Happy

Hopes for future sets?
The Nell and Oscar would be good for the Japanese. HMS Stronghold would be fantastic but unlikely. Everything else is pretty well covered now.

another variant to this is:

In August it concluded that by March 1942 it could create an eastern fleet consisting of the battleships Nelson and Rodney
, a battlecruiser, four of the old, unmodernized ‘R’ ( Royal Sovereign) class battleships, and an aircraft
carrier, together with cruisers and destroyers. In the meantime, Pound believed that moving the ‘R’
class battleships to the Indian Ocean would deter Japan from sending any of its capital ships into the area, while the presence of a battlecruiser and an aircraft carrier would deter Japanese cruisers from attacking British commerce. Pound also suggested that if the government’s principal objective was to deter Japan from entering the war at all, the battleships Nelson and Rodney, a  battle-cruiser and an aircraft carrier might be despatched to Singapore before any other movements took place. In the event of war, however, this force would fall back on Trincomalee.

from http://www.academia.edu/6555331/T...ralty_and_the_Dispatch_of_Force_Z

so you would replace the PoW and Repulse with the 4 wobbly R's and the Hermes

The British did indeed end up forming a powerful fleet based on the Old R's, Warspite and some carriers, cruisers etc. This was in place in time to contest the Indian Ocean Raid of April 1942.

I have created two 500 point fleets for this scenario, which are in the Fleet Builds section?

Post subject: Force Z option B Reply with quote   (Liked by:0)  Like this post
I've been reading about this a bit more to see what other units may have been available. I also wanted to make the Brits a legal 300 point force i.e. 25 units or less.

The biggest unit available was HMS Revenge. She was at Trincomalee in Sri Lanka when Force Z (called Force G at the time) arrived there at the end of November. Admiral Phillips considered her too slow to take with him, but we are not burdened by such trivial concerns!

There were also several ships that were actually designated to join Force Z and were on their way at the time. They were all only days away. The British had Exeter, which had been diverted off convoy duty, and the little old destroyers Scout and Thanet on their way from Hong Kong. The Americans had their 57th destroyer division on it's way. This consisted of Edsall and three sisters. The Dutch had sent the cruiser Java. Adding these ships gives Force Z a more allied flavour.

The air complement of the Indomitable is also more accurate. She had 24 Albacores, 12 Fulmars and 9 other fighters? Some sources say these 9 fighters were Martlets and others Hurricanes. As the Fulmars were in the majority I don't have to worry about it.

The ships that go are the ones that were under refit or repair at the time: Mauritius, Jupiter, Isis, Encounter, Vendetta and Stronghold, or were on convoy duty; Danae and Dragon. Cornwall is also removed as there were no plans to include her. One Buffalo is also removed. Historically Foece Z received no air support until after both Prince of Wales and Repulse had been sunk. The single Buffalo and Hudson are representing a mix of the Buffaloes, Hudsons and Blenheims that the allies might have been able to muster up in an ideal world. The allied OOB is now as follows:

300 points, 25 units.

BB Prince of Wales (F).
BB Revenge (use Royal Oak).
BC Repulse.
CV Indomitable (use Illustrious) with 1 x Fulmar (use Barracuda model with TN card) and 1 x Albacore (use Swordfish MkI model with TK card).
CV Hermes (use Bearn model with TN card) with 1 x Swordfish MkII.
CA Exeter.
CL HNLMS Java (use K. Krim model with TP card).
CL Durban (use ORP Dragon model with TN Dunedin card).
DD's Electra and Express (use St Laurent models with TN Electra card).
DD's USS Whipple, John D Ford, Edsall and Alden (use Edsall).
DD RAN Vampire (use Witte de With model with TP Vampire card).
DD's Scout, Thanet and Tenedos (use Goteborg models with Thanet Forumini custom card).
SS's Dutch K-XVII and O16 (use Soviet S-13 models with TP K XVI card).
On the land air base -1 x B-339 Buffalo (use the Finnish model with the TP Dutch card) and 1 x Hudson (use Beaufighter model with TN card).

You could always use this for HMS Revenge:

You could do, but it would make the Brits over 300 points. Also, I tend to like to use official cards if there is a good viable version available.

Just throwing it out there as an alternative.  I think another couple of the named ships are available in the new decks of custom cards, as well.  I only mentioned it because I noticed you included a couple Forumini cards as well.

Keep up the good work!

Not too keen on Custom cards. It's not that I don't like them, it's just a pain to print them out and then they need putting in a sleeve with a real card to make them useable. There are only two now left in the OOB. The Albacore is being done by Team Kraken. That just leaves the the little S class. No real substitute for these. Hopefully we will get one (HMS Thanet) in deck E! Smile
