A couple of friends & I were having a grand ole time with England and Germany last night when someone had the idea of including the possibility of a torpedo making a circular run & hitting the submarine which launched it (alas poor USS Tang).

Before I get into what we came up with, which is very simple, please let me first state that we have long since houseruled our subs so that they remain hidden from the enemy player until detected. If you use the standard Wizards rules I wouldn't personally recommend this option as subs are pretty much useless once the opposing player decides to do something about them.

Anyway- our Circular Run Rules:
1. The possibility of a circular run is only present when the submarine player rolls multiple dice.
2. With #1 in mind, lets say I am rolling 3 dice with my sub. If the results of those 3 dice include more than one 1 (i.e. 4, 1, 1), then 1 of the fish circled back.
3. When a torp has circled back, roll a single die. On a result of 1 or 2, you were just struck by your own torpedo.

and although it only happened once (to my poor U-boat) and my attack missed the HMS Rodney completely, it is possible to hit both your target & yourself with the same torp spread.

The idea that it could happen in the game because it happened in reality is of course the ultimate aim, and hopefully, by requiring multiple "1s" to be rolled to bring the possibility up will also make it come up as rarely as it did historically (when you consider the thousands of torps fired all over the world between 39 -45, it was a very rare event).

Anyway, there you go...circular runs...

Interesting, would you make this an issue for all countries or just Germany and the US as those there the only two to experience circular runs (as far as I've seen).

I can see an argument for just the US & Germany, and for the purest historical gamer, that would be the way to go.

However, in the interest of fair play, I intend it to apply to all nations.
