Post subject: Caio Duilio - Scratch build (how to advice)
|
|
|
I've been planning on doing this ship for quite some time now and finally managed to extricate my thumb
The Roma is for scale and detail reference. Obviously I'll not make the Duilio as detailed, that's just nuts
http://dev.pardalis.se/waratsea/caioduilio/img_0006.jpg
Laying out the basic pieces of the hull and some barbettes.
You can see that I've printed out the blueprints to scale and stuck a cutout to the styrene sheets with a gluestick. This makes it real easy when sanding and filing the pieces down to shape.
http://dev.pardalis.se/waratsea/caioduilio/img_0008.jpg
Here the pieces of the hull are in place and more barbettes have been added together with smokestacks.
http://dev.pardalis.se/waratsea/caioduilio/img_0009.jpg
Again the pieces of the hull, now roughly cut down to shape with a scalpel. I run the scalpel lightly just outside of the line a few times and then I gradually apply more pressure until I break through or I have weakened the piece enough so that I can break it off.
For you guys who moved over from the old AH forum will recognise my methodology from the Aquila build. I have revised some steps based on experiences from that build.
Hopefully the Duilio will end up half as good looking as the Roma. But that's for another day (month)
Cheers!

That's polystyrene sheets, the type you find at a model shop. Evergreen I think it was.

Cool man. Funny how some of us have drastically different approaches to things. I do my turrets very differently, and I almost posted a pic recently...have to now. You'll get a kick out of it, I think. Working on the Barnham currently, so it shouldn't be too long.
Gotta say, it's nice seeing all the fleets growing. Looking forward to seeing both the finished turrets and the complete vessel. Maybe someday they'll all do battle at a convention or something. _________________ Whosoever conquers others has force.

@Celt:
I'm very interested to know what method you chose I've done the secondaries too with the same method, and works well for me. Pretty simple and consistent!
I'd love to see all these cool minis in real life, maybe sink a few of them ;D
@hgraves:
Thanks man!
More pics coming pronto! I find that this method actually is well suited for mass production.
@motobear:
Cheers!
UPDATE:
http://dev.pardalis.se/waratsea/caioduilio/img_1598.jpg
Here you can see the main batteries shaved down to shape and mounted. The green stuff was nice and compliant to work with. I'll add rangefinders and extras in the final detailing stage.
In the foreground are the barrels and base plates for the secondaries.
http://dev.pardalis.se/waratsea/caioduilio/img_1600.jpg
A secondary turret in the first stage of assembly, the base plate has been glued to the barrels. After the glue has set I cut the barrels off with a scalpel. Hey presto! Nice, even barrels. I used styrene for the barrels for the secondaries because I thought it would be easier to work with, and it did work out pretty well.
http://dev.pardalis.se/waratsea/caioduilio/img_1601.jpg
The secondaries after the first stage of assembly and a test assembly of a 10 cm DP gun for the AA-battery. It shows a bit of promise. It's just a bit of hollow styrene rod where the hole is slightly larger than the styren rod I inserted which gives the proper angle for the barrel.
http://dev.pardalis.se/waratsea/caioduilio/img_1602.jpg
Same thing only now with the green stuff globs added.
For the DP guns I taped together five hollow rods and sawed off ten pieces. Now I'll at least have pieces of equal size for all the guns on one side _________________

Your ship (and technique) is advancing quickly! I really appreciate the 'step-by-step' photos. It is a lot of fun, and very educational, to watch you do it. Taking the photos is an exercise in patience all by itself. Many thanks. _________________

Lookin good mate! I like your method of turret and barbette mountings, using hollow plastic tubing makes sense. I bet if you wanted to you could actually have the turrets rotate by mounting a rod pin in the bottom and drilling out a hole for it in the ship base. It would be a bit o' work but could be worth it in the end when she is finished.
Hey WOC! You need to seriously recruit this lad for your sculpting dept for WAS!!! Him GOT TALENT!!! _________________ The SCA: Just an excuse for getting dressed up in Medieval clothing and beat each other up with padded sticks! |

Ta Mate!
Rotating turrets would have been awesome, but I need to focus on making it a workable playing piece as well. It's a bit distracting if the turrets fall off
I might try it on a later mini though, just to see if nothing else
Hmmm... Making minis for a living ey? Better be careful what I wish for _________________
