*****Playtested and Updated*****

Operation Windsor
Battle for Carpiquet
July 4-5, 1944

History:  Operation Windsor was a Canadian offensive launched as part of the Battle of Normandy during WWII.  The attack was undertaken by the Canadian 3rd Infantry Division in an attempt to capture the Norman town of Carpiquet - as well as the adjacent airfield - from the occupying German forces.  The attack was originally part of the later stages of Operation Epsom to protect the eastern flank of the main assault.  It was postponed and launched the following week.

On July 4th, 1944 four battalions of the 3rd Canadian Infantry attacked Carpiquet in conjunction with flanking attacks by armoured regiments.  Although the 8th Brigade captured Carpiquet by mid-afternoon, heavy resistance to the south prevented the capture of the airfield.  The following day, Canadian Forces repelled several German counter attacks, held Carpiquet in preparation for more attacks on Caen as part of Operation Charnwood.

Maps:
Map 13 - Hill hex is the NW Corner.  1/2 Hexes are in play for this scenario

The City/Town Hexes are the City and Airfield of Carpiquet.  Place an airfield tile over hexes C53A & C46A.  Carpiquet airfield defenses must be set up on or adjacent to the airfield.

The Nebelwerfer must be set up in any forest hex on the SE corner of the map.

Setup: The roadway that runs through the town across the map is the dividing line.

Germans set up first and must place their obstacles before the Canadians set up.  Germans deploy in any city/town hex on or south of the roadway.  The Allies can set up in any open hex north of the road.

Special Rules:

Rocket Typhoon!  The Hawker Typhoons can make 2 rocket attacks during the battle.  First attack on turns 1 or 2 and the second attack on turns 5 or 6.  If shot down prior to the second attack, the plane forfeits its opportunity.

Objectives:

Major Allied Victory:
Control more of the town hexes than the Germans and complete control of the airfield.

Minor Allied Victory:
Contest more of the town hexes than the enemy and contest the airfield.

Major Axis Victory:
Control more town hexes than the Allies and control Carpiquet airfield.

Minor Axis Victory:
Control the airfield.

Historical outcome:
Despite heavy house to house fighting in a battle of attrition, the Canadians fought their way into Carpiquet.  It took them a full day before they held Carpiquet and the airfield.  Only the southern hangers and control building remained in German hands.  After midnight on the 5th, the 12th SS counter attacked and fought throughout the night.  Prepared defense and machine gun fire repelled the Germans.  With artillery support and Hawker Typhoon rocket fire, the Germans could not breach the Canadian lines.  Though in Canadian hands, the Germans persisted with Nerbelwerfer and Artillery attacks even after withdrawal.  Strategically the Allies tied up forces that could have fought elsewhere in the Battle for Caen.  While the Allies could absorb the losses, the Germans could not.  Though they lost ground, the Germans caused twice the casualties they took.

From the old Buffalo Soldiers card (pre-Revision)

You don't get -1 on Attack Dice while Disrupted.

The Hitlerjugend card looks good, but isn't 9/7 a bit high for the QoR?

They seemed like a good unit and I was trying to make a Vet SMLE/WVI-like piece for each CW nationality.  I chose them.
