It should be pointed out that the poor Boomerang never made an air-to-air kill in its entire history. It was used almost entirely for army co-operation and ground attack. One Boomerang pilot who was attacked by a Zero wrote an account telling how the outer wings, rudder, tail, inner wings and the fuselage were rapidly chewed up by cannon fire. When he bailed out there was virtually only the cockpit, the engine and the stumps of the main spars and wing roots left airborne.

The Boomerang was assembled at speed using components of the Commonwealth Wirraway. Strangely the two-seater Wirraway DID make one front-gun kill and it was a good kill. A single Wirraway (187 mph - one front gun) found itself above and behind a single Zero/Zeke over the New Guinea jungle. The Aussie pilot decided that attack was the best form of defence and bounced the Zero and shot it down in the first pass. The wreckage was later found and the pilot was discovered to have been shot dead. Lack of pilot armour on early Zeros was a real problem. The crew of the Wirraway were sent a crate of beer by their base when they reported the kill.

I have a mad vision of the Zero pilot wearing a Walkman and bopping away to 'Dire Straights' and totally failing to look behind him when the Wirraway made its first and only pass.

Wikipedia says the Zero crashed into the sea, one of my sources says it crashed into the jungle and was visited by Australian ground forces.
