I have just picked up a finger four of the P-47s and they look nice. Clearly there is no card for this type yet.

Possible Speed: 2-4    Hi Speed: 5-6

I would envisage gunnery of 8-6-4 at least (possibly more in the eight-gun version)

Armour 4 Vital Armour 8

I am undecided about turn, roll and climb but dive would have to be 6

I am undecided about giving it an extra hit point like the Bf 110 or (instead) give it a once-a-game saving roll of 4,5,6 which the player can elect to use on any ONE of the three hit points... i.e. he can choose to use it on his/her first hit or save it until the middle or last hit. The P-47 had a reputation for being a tough bird.

I am not sure if anyone plays with ground fire or flak rules for low level flight but I would also give the P-47 a plus in the armour area for being hit by ground fire as the engine was not only mighty tough and could fly with cylinders shot out, it also had no radiator or cooling system. A bullet in the radiator was a killer for many liquid fuelled aeroplanes.

Ideas for a P-47 card???

You are on your way here...

I fully expect Set II to make it to shelves near its new release date, and I believe the Thunderbolt, in one form or another, will be represented.

However, we can make a card for several types and pilots if we can agree on numbers.

Please move this to Custom Cards and we can begin work...

Thank you!

How can I move this to Custom Cards?

It's not you, no worries.

I would do it, but I have only mod abilities in Modelling and Cards.

Another mod must do it....

Cheers,

FF

I have some 1/100 scale P-47D models on order too, so I am also interested in a card for them. Here are my ideas.

Speed: 2-4 Low & 5-7 High
(Max speed 433 mph (697 km/h); about the same as the P-51 at 437 mph (703 km/h), but you have to draw the line somewhere, so you could make the p-47's high speed 5-6 too).

Gunnery 9/7/5 (8 x .50 cal version)

Turn: ?
Roll: ?
Climb: 4 (Rate of climb was 3,120 fpm; comparable to other aircraft rated 4)
Dive: 6

Armor: 4
Vital Armor: 7
Hits: 3

Specials:

Sturdy: Whenever an attack against this unit equals its armor, roll a die. On a 4 or higher the attack deals no damage to this aricraft.

Rugged: Whenever an attack against this unit equals its vital armor, roll a die. On a 4 or higher the attack deals 1 point of damage to this aircraft instead of destroying it outright.

Methanol Boost: Once per game, when this aircraft ends its move, it can move straight 1 extra hex.

I think that the Sturdy and Rugged SA's, which already exist in the game, are the best ways to account for the Thunderbolt's renowned survivability. Giving it Armor 5, Vital Armor 8, or Hits greater than 3 would be a little too over the top in my opinion.

The P47 was completely unmanoeuvrable at low speeds. At about bf110 level.

Size is for 4 hits.

So the P-47's turn and roll scores should be around 1-2 maybe? I'd like to see a comparison of turn and roll rates in degrees per second for all of the airplanes, but I haven't been able to find any such comparison tables online.

Both the P-47D and the BF110C had empty weights of around 10,000 lbs (4,500 Kg), which is apparently how RB determined hit points, but the BF110C had two engines which meant it could lose one and still fly 'crippled.' Of course, the P-47's big radial engine could withstand a lot of damage too, but it still only had one engine, and I imagine that propellers were fragile.

I still think the P-47's heavy armor is best represented by armor 4 and the sturdy and rugged SA's. These SA's , in effect, probably give it an extra hit point or two in the game anyway. I think this combination better represents the fact that it was sturdy, but it still only had one engine to lose.

You should use il2compare to compare different planes with each other.

Recent reading suggests that the P47 was better at high altitude (around 27,000 feet) so I would favour giving it a +1 on attributes like roll, etc, in height bands 5 & 6.

Possibly with a -1 at low level, say height bands 1 & 2.

I think that brings us closer to the flavour of the beast.

Yup. Either -1 low or +1 high depending on base stats.

I like this idea, but also prefer this line and believe it to be pretty accurate:

Armor: 4
Vital Armor: 8
Hits: 4

Lots ans lots of accounts of these birds coming home with 4 shot cylinders and inches missing from wings, etc.

Cheers,

FF

Ahhh, if we only all owned a copy and a PC that runs it...lol

Link for a compare version download:

http://war.by-airforce.com/downloads/il2compare-4.07.html

I am sure that there must be others...

You may also use Games like CY6! or the old AH Luftwaffe, etc.

Many of these games are already well researched and have comparable stats, etc.

Cheers,

FF

Somewhere I have the guide books for Air Warrior. I will swear that the pages contained power specs, etc.

I shall have to look out for them.

I could live with this, but I still think it should get Sturdy and Rugged. Those SA's were invented for this plane. To me, the main question is whether or not it deserves both Sturdy and hits 4.

I see your point.

I will post a Francis Gabreski card and we can continue this discussion, or, just put it under review for our "Okaying" process...hehe

I'll come right back and post the link....

...almost done, and I think ND is correct on 'Hits' number here, it's 4.
